The aim of this research area is to study evolution and variability of climate as well as long-term trends of environmental contaminants using tree rings as natural archives. The primary investigation sites for tree ring studies (dendrochronology) will be high-altitude pine forests in the Taygetos Mountains and other high-elevation-sites in Greece, but also construction wood in old buildings and archaeological material will be used. Lake and marine sediments will be analysed for microflora and fauna which yield information on vegetation and climate evolution. In the studies on environmental contaminants state of the art analytical facilities will be used to investigate changes of both inorganic and organic pollutants over time.
