In 2008 Stockholm University approached TEMES S.A., a premier developer of luxury mixed-use resorts, with a view to establishing an environmental observatory in Messinia in the southern Peloponnese.

Messinia was chosen on account of the region’s unique climatic and geomorphological characteristics, which make it an ideal location for a climate change research observatory. Costa Navarino was specifically selected because of the developer’s strong commitment to preserving the natural environment, as demonstrated by its implementation of advanced and in many cases pioneering environmental management practices through all stages of the development.

Preparatory work carried out by the three parties to the project –  Stockholm University, the Academy of Athens and TEMES – led in December 2009 to the signing of a memorandum of cooperation.
